We Need An Aggregate Sector That Works For Everyone.

A recent Auditor General’s report revealed that the Ontario government lacks the resources to adequately enforce regulations meant to ensure aggregate companies operate responsibly in our communities. While aggregate will play a critical role in meeting Ontario's growing infrastructure needs, we need a sector that works for everyone.

What's The Issue?
Poor inspection rates of gravel pits and quarries is impacting local communities.

In December 2023, the Office of the Auditor General released its report on the management of aggregate resources in Ontario. The report found that a lack of oversight & regulatory resources is leading to poor inspection rates and significant compliance and enforcement issues.

These issues directly impact our communities. Whether it's the cost to repair undue damage to our roads, impacts on local residents' health & safety, or the risk of environmental degradation around these sites, our communities are paying the price for this lack of oversight and enforcement.

The Ford Government has said they want to "Build Ontario". But first we need an aggregate sector that works for everyone. We need government to implement the Auditor General's recommendations, including:

Example of Taxes By Property Type / Acre
Industrial Property (Similar to Aggregate Pit)
$9,500/acre
Single Family Home
$7,700/acre
Gravel Pits $316/acre

Establishing & Following Annual Inspection Plans

Increase government funding for inspecting aggregate sites, including establishing and following annual inspection plans.

Improving Compliance and Enforcement

Between 2018 and 2022, inspectors only made 26 penalty referrals for non-compliance - less than 1% of the over 3,400 violations identified.

Making Rehabilitation Requirements a Priority

Ensuring environmental standards are met and maintained and that sites are rehabilitated once exhausted.
